Dr Darra J Murphy

Darra is a general practitioner (GP / Family physician) who graduated from University College Dublin in 1976. He worked as a country doctor in Australia for 25 years, including time spent as a GP Obstetrician, Casualty Director and Clinical Administrator. Along the way he helped to establish an Indigenous Health Service, a Regional GP training program, a teaching practice, a University Centre for Rural Health and a regional organization of GPs / family physicians. He finished his rural career as Director of Medical Services & Primary Care at a Regional Health Service.

Darra completed the EMDR Institute Basic Training in EMDR Therapy in 2000 with Sigmund Burzynski and Anthony Smith. The EMDR Institute is the Training and Research organisation founded by Dr Francine Shapiro, the originator and developer of EMDR Therapy. Since becoming an EMDR Institute Facilitator in 2010, he has assisted at ~25 EMDR Institute Basic Trainings and Master Classes. He became an EMDR Institute Faculty Instructor (trainer) in 2015 and has conducted ~10 Basic trainings himself since then and as well as presenting at conferences.

As President of the Australian Society for Psychological Medicine (2014-2016), he contributed to the development and delivery of Basic Skills Training in Focused Psychological Strategies for Australian GPs. When chair of the Psychological Medicine Group of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP, 2017-2019), he developed an advanced learning module in EMDR Therapy for GPs.

Darra has been in private practice in Yarraville, an inner western suburb of Melbourne since 2004. During that time his practice has changed from 75% general practice and 25% EMDR Therapy to 25% general practice and 75% EMDR Therapy. During the COVID era, however, he has been limited to providing Telehealth for personal health as well as professional reasons. As such, he is currently in transition to retirement from clinical practice.

His particular area of interest is in the physiology of EMDR Therapy and what it is teaching us about the relationship between neurology, psychology and sociology. It is his intention to continue to provide training and support to anyone interested in learning and becoming proficient in EMDR Therapy and eligible to undertake the necessary training.
