It is important that kids can be kids, however, about one in ten kids have problems associated with ANXIETY which prevents them from doing things they would enjoy or makes them avoid places because they are too scared. Anxiety can cause emotional and behavioural difficulties in children and teenagers, which has an impact on their social, emotional and educational growth.
The Cool Kids program is a 10 session Cognitive Behaviour based therapy group which specifically targets children aged 8 years to 12 years who meet criteria for an Anxiety Disorder or who have high levels of anxious symptoms.
The Hummingbird Centre Clinical Psychologist Nimra Bilgrami will be running the kid's group. Nimra is an accredited Cool Kids provider. The children's program allows them to:
- Recognise emotions such as fear, stress and anxiety;
- Challenges their beliefs about those emotions;
- Encourages them to engage in avoided activities in more positive ways;
The Hummingbird Centre Psychologist Madeleine Berryman will be running the parent's group. Maddy is an accredited Cool Kids provider. The parenting sessions are to enable parents to best support their children learn these new skills, to help them practice the new strategies in day-to-day activities.

A Medicare rebate of $22.35 is available per session to any child that holds a valid Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). This rebate does not affect the number of individual counselling sessions available on the same MHCP.
